It was an early Sunday morning in the West Coast (Pacific Daylight Time) on July 21st. Birds chirped in Los Angeles, while VSFighting 2019 attendees cheered as the SFV AE Grand Final match was about to begin. The 8-hour difference between the West Coast and the UK made no difference in comparison to my energy and the UK fans’ energy. I had coffee and the UK fans had hype.
Fresh off his upset win against the much younger Fujimura at CEO 2019 in Daytona, Florida, RedBull Bonchan was coming out of the Loser’s Bracket as the sole survivor to battle the Capcom Pro Tour leader seated on the other side of the ring who was none other than Reciprocity Punk.
Bonchan mentioned in his stream that he wanted to verse Punk in a mirror match at a tournament. He wish came true. Surprisingly, Sagat was locked in for the first match. Bonchan probably wanted to test how he would fare against the Number 1 Karin in the world. Punk prevailed in the first match. Bonchan did well in the beginning by winning in the first match, but quickly switched to Karin after losing Match 2.
Sagat’s weaknesses showed on the second match as Punk checked his fireball game. The Grand Finals table quickly turned with the character switch. Both players move to a Grand Final Reset after a 3-1 advantage to Bonchan.
This game was a spectacle of Punk’s counter-hit and Bonchan’s RedBull can chugs. Probably an empty can after 15 minutes of playing. As a playwright would create it, we went to a final round in Game 5. Both players danced: shimmies, throws, and jukes. Trading blows one after the other. Punk could not beat his favorite player that day. Bonchan takes his hat off and raised his hands in a big sigh of relief. With bleached blonde hair and adrenaline rushing to his face, Bonchan proved himself as the superior Karin and the most venerated SFV player going into EVO 2019.
