Dream to Reality
It’s the League of Legends international match the Western Hemisphere had been waiting for. Only a couple seasons ago this was something we only dream of, but it became a reality when Team Liquid (TL) rolled through the defending Worlds champions Invictus Gaming (IG) in MSI 2019 semi-finals with a convincing 3-1 result. Then G2 bested Korea’s SKT in a Game 5 series the following night. The hype was real. With China and Korea out of the tournament, this match was going to squash the NA vs. EU feud.
Finals Preview
TL Doublelift‘s comments about being matched against G2 were conservative knowing he loves to trash talk, but G2 players didn’t hold back. TL’s Doublelift and Jensen said they could beat G2 if they played with the same aggression and focus against IG. G2 unhesitatingly declared they had more to offer than TL and that they knew how to counter TL’s strong botlane which consisted of 7-year veteran Doublelift and 2017 Worlds champion CoreJJ.
Finals
I’ll save you time: it was a slaughter in favor of EU. G2 put enormous pressure in the botlane shutting down Doublelift and CoreJJ in all 3 games. TL’s jungler Xmithie had no answer to all the ganks down bot. TL mistimed their teleports in the hopes to help out their brethren, but it only put more salt in the wound. Meanwhile TL’s top and mid-lane were being outclassed in 1-v-1 situations. Game 3 was a dagger that ended before 20 minutes stamping G2 as the world record holder of the fastest international finals series. It was a sight to see for the EU fans and a moment that NA fans and residents alike would rather forget. Caps, midlaner for G2, deservedly hoisted up the MVP trophy. Albeit a sweep to remember for EU, it’s reassuring to know that NA has a place in the international stage. Liquid pushed aside those who stood in their way and took a seat at the finals! That’s an achievement that the NA region needs to be proud of.

NA Will Remember
G2’s confidence in interviews prior to the finals showed during those 3 games. They knew what to do and didn’t give an inch. Doublelift couldn’t even safely farm during laning phase. Congratulations to the G2 boys and to the whole EU region. Not defeating EU in a finals at an international event is a stain for NA, especially in Twitch chat, but we have to keep believing. This belief got the TL squad overlooking over teams like IG and SKT. G2 are dubbed as the First Blood Kings and the Kings of EU, now they are the Kings of the West and even the world. Rest assured, NA showed up taking down a team they weren’t even supposed to in the semis and reminded the world that aggressiveness and unfamiliarity is the East’s Achilles heel. There are a lot of information for NA to analyze after today. We’ll hold this L for now and celebrate a fellow Western team’s win in MSI. The rivalry doesn’t end here. Get ’em next time boys.
